The surroundings of Porec were inhabited in the Neolithic Period. The town was founded by the Romans (Parentium) and the town plan has remained to this day. The climate is very mild, without oppressive heat in the summer. The area has rich vegetation; in certain places pine trees stretch almost to the sea. The economy is based on agriculture, wine, olive and fruit growing, fishing and tourism. The old part of town lies on a small peninsula separated from the mainland by an artificial channel. It is protected from the sea by Sveti Nikola island that has a sandy and rocky beach.
