General information
Town and harbor placed in a deep bay at the foot of Mount Hum, on the western side of the island of Vis. The area is characterized by beautiful sandy and pebble beaches. The eastern coast is dotted with pebble beaches, the most popular ones being Gusarica, Nova posta and Velo zalo. Due to its distance from the mainland, the surrounding waters are rich in fish, shells and mollusks. The economy is based on agriculture, wine and vegetable growing, fishing, fish processing, maritime activities and, as of late, tourism. The fertile soil in Komiza is excellent for growing grapes and other fruit. The town is known for its desserts made from carob that go well with famous wines from Komiza. Komiza offers excellent accommodation in the hotel or private apartments, as well as extensive sports and recreational offer encompassing boccia, basketball, volleyball, handball and soccer, as well as water sports, such as diving, sailing and windsurfing. The cultural and entertainment offer consists of the events organized during the Komiza Summer Festival. We recommend cultural and historic sites such as the monastery, fortalices and so on. Komiza is known for its fishermen throughout the world, especially in California. It is connected to the mainland by ferry lines from Split to the town of Vis that lies 22 km from Komiza.
