The town has a rich cultural and historic heritage including a mosaic from the Roman period (2nd century), sv. Ivan church (with baptistery from the 6th century), Pod Dolom site where you can find ruins of a Roman villa, Cyclops walls (ruins of Greek fortification walls), ruins of Greek houses and streets, Hektorovic fortress (16th century), Dominican monastery with its collection of archeological artifacts and lapidarium, Juraj Plancic gallery (20th century art), as well as Skor Square from the Baroque period.

Visits in the summer months when numerous cultural and sports events are on the agenda. The program includes Stari Grad Summer, concerts, recitals, entertainment performances, International Summer Music School, and swimming marathon helf on the first Sunday in September.
General information
It was inhabited by Greeks in the 4th century BC and called Pharos at the time. After that came the Romans. During the Renaissance it was town of Croatian writers and artists. The town and harbor are placed on the northwestern part of the island of Hvar, 18 km away from the town of Hvar. The town can boast of having cultural monuments dating back to Ancient Greek times, making it even more attractive for tourists. The town has nice beaches, whereas the northern part of the bay is suitable for underwater fishing. The economy is based on agriculture, fruit and olive growing, wine growing and production, fishing and tourism. Accommodation is available in hotels, apartments and bungalows. Various local specialties served with famous wines of Hvar are part of the gastronomic offer. Those interested in sports and recreation have at their disposal basketball, tennis, soccer, boccia, as well as water sports equipment rental, including windsurfing and diving. It is connected to the mainland by ferry lines to Rijeka and Split.
