General information
Sveti Martin na Muri is placed in a valley, between the last northern hills of Medimuske gorice towards the river Mura. It is one of the oldest parishes and settlements in this part of Medimurje. It was at this place that the famous Roman road from Ptuj to Lendava crossed the river Mura.
The municipality of Sveti Martin na Muri is the place where the river Mura enters the territory of the Republic of Croatia and where the flatland area slowly transforms into highlands. The area is characterized by a mild, continental climate.
The northern part of the natural environment is the protected landscape of the river Mura. The Mura and its immediate surroundings have, in this area, preserved their original characteristics. The forest vegetation includes the common oak, hornbeam, alder-tree, willow-tree, poplar-tree and locust-tree.
Due to the diversity of habitat, the fauna is diverse as well.
Highlights of the Place:
The river Mura and its small backwater channels, as well as ponds are inhabited by a large number of river fish, amphibians, swamp birds, while the meadows and small woods by wild game. In the waters of the Mura there are some thirty types of fish, of which the most common are carps. On the edges of the river landscape, there are fields taking on interesting forms, as well as settlements that follow the flow of the river. Much has been done to preserve the natural environment, while the river Mura has been proclaimed a protected area. All of the aforementioned favors the development of tourism, including bathing and eco-tourism, the production of organic food, fruit and wine growing and the like.
