General information
Beli Manastir is a settlement in the Baranja region in the town of the same name in the County of Osijek-Baranja, in Croatia, and at the same time the largest and most important settlement, as well as cultural and business center of Baranja. Beli Manastir lies on the southwestern slopes of Banska kosa hill, in the Banska kosa micro-region, belonging to the eastern Croatian lowlands, 32 km north of the city of Osijek, 26 km south of the town of Mohač in Hungary (15 km from Duboševica border crossing), at an altitude of 101 m. It developed on the Pleistocene terrace of the Drava River, at the meeting point of Bansko brdo hill (Banska kosa hill) and the alluvial plain of the Karašica River. The settlement of Beli Manastir has an area of 36,88 km2, and the town 62,84 km2. In 2001, the settlement had 8671 inhabitants (10146 ten years earlier), and the town 10986 inhabitants. In the 1971 census, the pre-war municipality of Beli Manastir that encompassed the Croatian part of Baranja had 56 322 inhabitants. The development of Beli Manastir into a town center is related to the need of creating a new micro-regional center after Mohač, Šikloš and Pečuh became a part of Hungary in 1920. Parts of the town: Beli Manastir-Planina, Beljsko naselje, Haljevo, Palača and Sudaraš. Settlements in the town are: Beli Manastir, Branjin Vrh , Šećerana and Šumarina. The settlement of Beli Manastir lies at the intersection of state roads D7 (Duboševica border crossing towards Hungary - Kneževo - Branjin Vrh - Beli Manastir - Kozarac - Čeminac - Švajcarnica - Darda - Bilje - Osijek - Đakovo – Slavonski Šamac border crossing towards Bosnia and Herzegovina) and D517 (Beli Manastir /D7/ - Petlovac - Baranjsko Petrovo Selo - Valpovo /D34/).
