History - Croatian souvenirs

 
 
Maraschino - famous liqueur made of miraculous andhealthy marasca cherries, which grow the best in the surroundings of Zadar. TheKarst landscape, red soil, plenty of sun and bura winds - all of thiscontributes to the exceptional aroma of this liqueur, which was shipped fromZadar all over the world in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Penkala - Slavoljub Penkala, one of the greatestEuropean inventors, who, in 1906, invented the first pen (penkala) in the worldand, in 1907, the first fountain pen. A penkala is nowadays an authenticCroatian souvenir that bears witness to the importance of Zagreb as anindustrial, commercial and cultural center at the beginning of the 20th century.

Morcic - One of the unique souvenirs that willremind tourists of their stay in the city of Rijeka, in Kvarner and in Croatia,is a traditional piece of jewelry from Rijeka known as “morcic”. It refers primarily toearrings ornamented with a black person’s head, wearing a turban. However, theicon of “morcic” can also be found on brooches, rings, tiepins and necklaces. Itwas believed to be an amulet having protective powers, while, according tolegend, women wore it as a symbol of victory over the Turks in the 16th century.

Cravat - Handmade silk ties are among the best-knownCroatian souvenirs. At the beginning, the cravat (tie) was a kerchief worn byCroatian soldiers in the 17th century. In the 18th century, in the form of abroad white scarf, it became part of the traditional male national costume.After that, ties became fashionable, a modern fashion accessory.
